‘EVERYONE matters, EVERYONE achieves.’
At St George’s we feel very strongly that our school should be part of the community and we are proactive in making links locally, nationally and globally. Working in partnership with others enables our pupils to meet a wide range of people and to learn about being part of a wider team.
Local and National Links
School links
We work closely with other local schools by joining in with a range of sporting and music events. We host our own events, open to other schools, such as football tournaments, Spelling Bee competitions and RE and Eco Debates.
St George’s Partnership and Local Community
We have a number of choirs at St George’s and we are keen for them to be able to take part in performances within the community. Through being part of the St George’s Partnership Group, each year our pupils sing at the Christmas Lights Switch On which is always a popular event. We also sing carols at a local care home which gives both the residents and our children a chance to celebrate Christmas together. Additionally, we visit the care home with groups of children at other times during the year to bring joy to both generations.
Telford (Centre) Rotary Club
In recent years, we have started a great link with Telford (Centre) Rotary Club which has enabled our pupils to take part in a range of competitions which help to enhance their learning. For example, we have had fantastic entries into the Young Writer, Young Artist, Young Environmentalist and Young Photographer of the Year Competitions. The Rotary Club have been very generous by supporting various projects such as our Covid food bank, outdoors planters, and paying towards our pantomime.
Ironbridge and Severn Gorge Lions Club
We also have an effective partnership with Ironbridge and Severn Gorge Lions Club. We collect food items each Christmas for their Hamper Appeal which supports local families in need. The Lions visit us each year with Father Christmas and his sleigh which is enjoyed by all. The Lions also supported our Covid food bank and have contributed to our ‘Reading Sheds’.
Maninplace
We have an ongoing partnership with local charity Maninplace who support homeless people within our local community. home/index.html (maninplace.org.uk)
Safer and Stronger Communities Project
We work closely with the Safer and Stronger Communities team to provide events and services for our school community and local residents. Events so far have included:
- range of after school clubs for our children
- preventing dog poo being left in our streets (art competition)
- aspirations/career event
- women’s self defence classes
- event for the public to volunteer/join local groups
- schools values graffiti project
- local underpass graffiti project
In 2023-24 we are supporting two charities which are the Telford Crisis Support and Classrooms in the Clouds (see below).
Global Links
Classrooms in the Clouds (Nepal)
St George’s have a strong link with a number of schools in rural Nepal through the charity Classrooms in the Clouds.
Home (classroomsintheclouds.org)
Mrs Sixsmith has been lucky enough to visit the schools, in the Himalayas, on four occasions and has introduced the link to the staff and children at St George’s since she was appointed as new Head Teacher in September 2019. In 2023, Nepali teachers visited our school for two weeks and the children were able to learn about life in Nepal and be able to compare the similarities and differences to our own community.
In April 2024, six members of staff visited Nepal as part of our teacher exchange programme. (This visit was totally funded by the staff themselves and did not cost the school or Classrooms in the Clouds any money). During this exciting visit, staff were able to visit five rural schools in mountain villages and met with local teachers and children. It was a tough two weeks of trekking and camping but was well worth it! Staff were able to take lots of photos and find out about life in Nepal so we can teach our children about it back at St George’s.
We have two Nepali teachers coming to St George’s in June 2024 for two weeks and very much look forward to welcoming them.
Making Further Links
We are always looking to make further links so please contact the school office if you think your group or business could work well alongside us at school.
