At St George’s, we aim to develop children’s scientific knowledge and understanding of the world around them whilst promoting a passion for scientific discovery. We offer a science curriculum that evokes curiosity through first-hand experiences, awe and wonder and opportunities to discover a personal love for science. By providing them with purposeful real-life contexts, the children understand how they are able to use science in later life. Our aim is for all children to become independent, inquisitive lifelong scientists and for them to enjoy and achieve in science.
We aim to build upon prior learning so that children know more and remember more when understanding scientific processes. From Foundation Stage to Year 6, we ensure scientific enquiry skills underpin every topic by following the Engaging Science curriculum which is underpinned by the National Curriculum. These skills provide a foundation that scaffolds children’s scientific learning throughout their time in school.
Inclusivity
We use the Engaging Science planning which is based on the National Curriculum objectives and reflects our intent. When we plan our lessons, we consider the needs of all children and use adaptive teaching strategies to enable them to make good progress and reach their potential. Within our planning, there are tasks to develop deeper thinking to extend the children’s disciplinary knowledge and skills.
Teachers use the document below to ensure that children are acquiring key skills, building on previous knowledge and developing their Science vocabulary.
Science Knowledge and Skills
Assessment
Children are assessed regularly in science. Every science lesson, teachers are informally assessing the children’s substantive and disciplinary knowledge through scientific enquiry and/or quizzes covering previous topics taught. The children are formally assessed against the year group’s objectives every term.
The science objectives are from the National Curriculum and can be found here.

Science Policy
We also have knowledge organisers which staff use to help them when planning science lessons. Here you can see the knowledge the children will acquire within the different topics.

Eco Warriors
St George’s were awarded The Eco-School’s Green Flag award in September 2022. Our Eco Warriors worked really hard to gain this award. We continue to have half-termly meetings where children will have the opportunity to communicate their feelings as well as influence decisions that are made. We talk about ways the school can make positive impacts for our planet. Eco Warriors will take on the responsibility of expressing the views of their peers and develop skills such as communication, confidence and negotiation.
Primary Science Quality Mark
In June 2023 we were awarded the PSQM this recognised the profile of Science being raised alongside the impact of a broad and balanced curriculum.
