‘Everyone matters, everyone achieves.’
At St George’s Primary School and Nursery, we place a high priority on safeguarding all the children in our care. As part of our curriculum, we have regular PSHEE sessions where we talk to children about how to keep themselves safe and who to talk to if they need help. We also lead assemblies throughout the year which help to teach the children to keep themselves safe, such as: water safety (summer and winter), NSPCC Pants Rule and e-safety.
All our staff receive regular safeguarding training. We help and support families ourselves but also signpost them to other agencies if extra assistance is needed.
Mrs Sixsmith (Head Teacher and Designated Safeguarding Lead) sits on two safeguarding groups for the Local Authority which aim to improve safeguarding across the whole borough. These are the Neglect Sub Group and Early Years and Education Sub Group.
We have a team of Designated Safeguarding Leads at St George’s. If you ever have a safeguarding concern about a child, a family or would like to discuss an online incident, please speak to one of our team. Again, should you have any concerns regarding child on child abuse including bullying, racial or homophobic incidents or sexual violence or harassment incidents, please contact our DSL Team immediately.
Mrs Croft leads on online safety.
Mrs Sixsmith leads on Prevent (anti- radicalisation), online safety, child exploitation and attendance.
Mrs Jervis leads on child exploitation and attendance.
Mrs Watts is our Domestic Abuse Ambassador.
Our safeguarding governor is Mrs Maureen Horton, who is also the lead governor for Prevent and children in care. Mrs Kate Clark, another governor, also supports the safeguarding team.
If you feel the concern is urgent and it is outside of school hours, you can call Telford and Wrekin Safeguarding team on 01952 385385.

St George’s Safety Guardians
(Children’s Safeguarding Board)
In January 2023, we launched our new Children’s Safeguarding Board which has been named St George’s Safety Guardians by the members in the group. The board is made up of 12 children across Years 4, 5 and 6 who meet every 2-4 weeks with Mrs Watts (Deputy Head Teacher). The aim of the board is for the children to help us make our school an even safer place as well as helping other children to make good choices about their own safety, such as when online. The Safety Guardians have helped to teach our pupils about the NSPCC Underwear Rules (PANTS), improve e-safety as well as find out from other children about areas of school that some children didn’t always feel safe in. For example, the children asked for extra bushes to be planted around the exterior fence.
