At St George’s C of E Primary School, it is our aim to provide our children with a multitude of experiences in a vast range of physical activities. From Early Years, we aim to provide our children with high-quality PE lessons each week which teach them the fundamental skills required to kickstart a love, enjoyment and passion for physical activity that will travel with them through school and beyond.
Physical education in Early Years is focused around improving coordination, spatial awareness and learning about how to keep our bodies healthy. We look at the changes in our bodies during physical exercise. We aim to improve children’s coordination through throwing, catching, jumping and dance. We also encourage children to become more independent as they try to get themselves changed with little, if any, help from adults.
In Key Stage One, children continue to develop key skills alongside the introduction of competitive and complex scenarios. Children begin to have opportunities to represent St George’s at inter-school events in a wide range of sports including cricket, athletics and football. In addition to this, we promote and demonstrate healthy lifestyle choices through eating, drinking and exercise.
As the children move through school into Key Stage Two, their fundamental skills are refined and opportunities are provided to demonstrate these in more competitive contexts. In lessons and through intra, inter-school competitions and extra-curricular activities, all children are given a platform to apply the skills which they have developed in their curriculum time. We are very passionate about providing all children with the chance to have many positive experiences during their physical education which will remain with them forever.
Through our consistent high-quality teaching, we nurture the children’s physical development and shape happy, responsible, respectful, kind and honest individuals who are ready to be active in the wider world with a healthy body and a healthy mind.
Teachers use the document below to ensure that children are acquiring key skills, building on previous knowledge and developing their PE vocabulary.

Part of the PE Funding that we receive from the government is used to subscribe to ‘PE Passport’. Purchased as an APP, PE Passport is a portable Physical Education planning, assessment and tracking tool that assists our staff with the delivery of enjoyable, active and high-quality sessions at St George’s. Within our curriculum design, we use PE Passport to support planning and delivery of engaging and interactive P.E. lessons. Teachers assess and monitor the progress of each child within the curriculum and our subject coordinators track children’s levels of participation and competition in extra-curricular clubs, events and competitions.
On our school field, we have our very own all-weather running track. The track is used regularly by our children throughout the school day. We encourage the children to run everyday to maintain a healthy body and a healthy mind.
In 2022/23, we were awarded the ‘Platinum’ award by the School Games Committee. The School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme that was launched in 2012, rewarding schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school. We were delighted to be awarded the highest accolade offered by the scheme for our commitment to and development of competition, school sport, physical education and physical activity at St George’s C of E Primary School.
Part of our PE Funding from the Government is also used to subscribe to the Telford and Wrekin School Sports Partnership. The Telford & Wrekin School Sports Partnership operates a unique, nationally recognised programme that is instrumental in developing sport and physical education opportunities for young people across the Telford & Wrekin area. At the core of their delivery, they provide a comprehensive annual programme for all partner primary and secondary schools covering sports coaching, competitions, sports festivals, young leader qualifications, teacher training and leadership and volunteering academies. We regularly attend their various Telford and Wrekin inter-school competitions and we have even hosted competitions here at St George’s.
Part of our PE funding from the Government is used to subscribe to the ‘Rugby Reading Champions’ programme. Each term, one of our year groups receives a session of rugby coaching with a coach from Stourbridge RFC. In addition to this, each child in a year group has the opportunity to read individually to their coach.
We love keeping active at home too! Have a look at all of our children who responded to our lockdown challenge in 2020.
In our drive to keep the children active, we hold themed whole-school events at St George’s such as the ‘Daily Mile Day’ and ‘The English Schools’ National Football Week.’ Our children raised over £4,000 to help purchase resources to support their mental health and well-being on our ‘Daily Mile Day.’ During ‘The English Schools’ National Football Week,’ our whole school played in small-sided matches and everyone had the opportunity to come into school wearing their favourite football kit.
Each term, we endeavour to provide our children with opportunities to attend extra-curricular clubs that are sports-based. Where possible, our clubs are free for our children to attend and are delivered by one of our teachers or a specialist sports coach.
Please follow our school’s Twitter and Facebook accounts which are regularly updated with the latest developments within Physical Education at St George’s C of E Primary School.
