Caterpillars!

We were very excited to find a delivery of caterpillars! We talked about the life cycle of butterflies and how we would help the caterpillars at each stage. We introduced the words pupa, chrysalis and cocoon. We also started to learn a song about caterpillars! I have added a link for your child to have a go at singing at home. The children have really enjoyed investigating and observing the caterpillars as well as making their own life cycles.

To 20 and beyond- week two!

This week we have continued our work on numbers beyond 10. We have introduced subtraction at the start of this week and played games whilst the children discussed numbers in relation to the words ‘fewer’ and ‘less’.

We have also looked at really knowing the numerical order of numbers 11-20. We have looked at missing numbers as well as ordering the numbers looking carefully.

We have attached some activity ideas sheets for you to support your child’s learning at home. Remember- if your child does something amazing, please remember to upload it to Tapestry so that we can share in their success!

Phonics- week beginning 15th May 2022

We have recently had a check on how we are getting on with our phonics and some of the children might have changed groups!

Mrs Croft’s group will be working on sh ch th.

Mrs McEvoy’s group with be working on oo (moon) oo (book) ar or.

Mrs Garraway’s group will be working on revising the following sounds: ai ee igh oo oa ar or ur ow oi ear.

Mrs Mackeen’s group will be working on cvcc words. (consonant-vowel-consonant-consonant e.g. tent)

The children have shown us just how good they are at using the sounds they know to read words. We are now focussing more on using these sounds when writing words and simple sentences. It would be great if alongside your child’s four times a week reading, if you could practise writing words that follow what your child has been working on in their group.

Queen’s Jubilee Dough Disco!

You may be aware of how much we love dough disco in reception!

In celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we have been learning some new moves.

Grab your dough and see if you can join in with this at home- see if you can spot that cheeky Corgi!

Super Science!

This week we have been doing lots of investigating! We have learnt lots about different life cycles, asked questions and had a good time finding out the answers.

Phonics

We have been really impressed with just how well the children have been doing with their phonics! The children have all been practising using their known sounds in their writing as well as the tricky words we have learnt.

This week, we will be learning the following sounds:

ur   ow   oi  ear

If you can, watch the video links below and then challenge your child to write some words that include the sounds that we are learning. Feel free to take pictures of anything that they do and pop it onto Tapestry!

Alive in 5!

The children have been continuing to develop their understanding of numbers up to 5. This week they have been looking at different ways that we can make 5 and having a go at recording their work.
The children have been using 5 frames to figure out how much they need to add to a given amount to make 5. They have also been figuring out how many are missing from a group of 5 by using their knowledge of number facts and their 5 frames. They had lots of fun hiding compare bears in a tent for their partners to work out how many were missing!

Rugby with Jacob

This half term it is reception turn to take part in the reading and rugby sessions with Jacob! The children have really enjoyed taking part in activities including stuck in the mud and developing their passing and catching skills. They have been working on the key values of rugby including being respectful, enjoying the game and teamwork. It was amazing to hear the children shouting encouragement to their friends. Tuesday afternoons are very much an exciting time in reception!

Talking about time!

This week we will be exploring time. We will be looking at the days of the week and the months of the year and putting them into the right order. If you could talk to your child about their birthday month it will be helpful for them to see themselves in the yearly calendar.

We will also be looking at clocks and making our own paper clock thinking about where the numbers on on it and discussing simple times. See if you can help your child to understand time by showing them timings from their daily routine e.g. bed time, dinner time etc.

Phonics

This week we will be learning the sounds l, ll and ss. We will also be practising tricky words with the children so that they ca recognise them by sight. Here are the tricky words that we are learning:
