Year 6 Spellings 🖋

On a Friday, your child will be given a set of spellings to learn and practise at home – these are also regularly practised as part of our everyday lessons. They will then be tested on these spellings the following Friday.

Alongside these, the children are expected to learn the 100 words as set out in the National Curriculum. Please see the link below.

We encourage the children to access and use Spelling Shed where possible. https://www.edshed.com/en-gb/login?return_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.spellingshed.com%2Fen-gb%2F

This resource is also accessed frequently during the school week. Please see your child’s reading record for their login details.

Year 6 Homework 📚🖋

In Year 6, children are given 1 piece of maths and 1 piece of English homework per week linked to what has been taught during lessons, as well as the weekly spellings. The homework will be given out on a Thursday (Set 3 Friday) and needs to be returned the following Wednesday. Homework will be marked during the following Thursday’s lesson (Friday for Set 3) with the children, in order to address any misconceptions. On occasion, a special homework project may be set that is linked to a foundation subject.

Regular reading is of great benefit to children’s learning. We strongly encourage the children to read at length as often as possible, recording what they have read in their reading records. It is advantageous for children to read a wide range of text genres including: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, magazines etc.

At St. George’s we celebrate achievement in reading. As part of this, one child per class is chosen to be ‘Reader of the Week’ and are rewarded and celebrated during Celebration Assembly. All children who have read 5 times per week, or the equivalent in pages are rewarded with a weekly ‘Reader’s Treat’ time.

Our Week in Year 6 😊

It has been another very productive and enjoyable week in Year 6. We have worked hard on learning some Christmas songs; getting us in the festive spirit! 🎅 In Maths, we have been focussing on 2D and 3D shapes in geometry, whilst in English we have been revisiting poetic features and have created our own winter-themed poem. History has been as fascinating as ever as we learnt about The Battle of Britain and its importance in the war.

Well done to all of your Year 6 for another marvellous week!

Young Good Citizen Award 👏👏👏

Yesterday, we had a very special assembly where we were visited by the police. They were visiting to present Owen Lowe with a ‘Good Citizen Award’ for his amazing thoughtfulness and going above and beyond to help others during lockdown. Everyone here at St. Georges is very proud of Owen for embracing our school values and the kindness he has shown in school; at home and within the community.

Well done again Owen! 🥰👏

Abstract Mountain Art! 🗻🏔🌏

This week we have started our ‘Mountain’ topic in geography. As an introduction to this topic, we have created some beautiful abstract art pictures. Some of the talent and creativity of the children really shone through, whilst they produced their masterpieces!

First Week Back! 📚🥰

What a wonderful week we have had! We are so proud of how the children have returned from their summer holidays; they are so smiley, settled and focussed already. 🤩 As staff we are all very excited for the year ahead and to be teaching such polite, kind and hard working children.

Leaver’s Assembly🙏 ❤

A huge well done to the children who shared their memories of St. George’s and also to those children who read their beautiful prayers as part of our leaver’s assembly. We all had a lovely time reminiscing and are excited for the next chapter in their lives. The children were also presented with a rainbow made from all of the staff and children’s names and polished stone keepsakes.

Here are some pictures of our assembly …
