Big Walk and Wheel Assembly

Today, a Road Safety Officer visited our school and, with the assistance of the Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs), led an assembly discussing the upcoming Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel event.

The event will take place from March 18th to March 22nd. Each day during the challenge, schools will compete to see which can record the highest number of students walking, using wheelchairs, scooting, or cycling to school. The JRSOs will collect this data and, with Miss Bibi’s assistance, upload it to the Sustrans website.

Schools participating will be entered into a daily prize draw for rewards, including equipment and accessories, if over 15% of their students engage in active travel that day.

We encourage all children to participate in the event and understand the health and well-being benefits of active travel. Please help us by encouraging your child to walk, scoot, or cycle to school during this week.

Reading Focus Week/ Author Visit 📚❤

This week, we are celebrating ‘Reading Focus Week’ at St George’s! Throughout this week, the children will participate in various reading activities to promote a love for reading.

To kickstart the week, we invited Roy Bradshaw, a local author, to lead a Key Stage One assembly. He showcased some of the books he had written and read ‘Barley’s Biscuits’ to us. Following the assembly, Roy conducted workshops for Years Two and Three. These workshops focused on his story ‘Konk the White Crocodile,’ and the children had the opportunity to create their own 2D and 3D models of the main character.

REMINDER

It is World Book Day is on Thursday, March 7th. The children can come to school dressed as a book character if they’d like, or they can wear their pyjamas. All children are welcome to bring their favourite book from home.

On 14th March, we are having an Aspirations Day in school!

This event is aimed at inspiring our children to dream big, explore various education paths, and consider different career options.

We have invited over 20 visitors from diverse career backgrounds to share insights about their professions with the children. During the day, the children will participate in hands-on activities related to different jobs.

In addition to this, we are also organising a ‘Careers Fair’ starting around 2:30 pm in the large hall. We invite all parents and carers to join us and interact with professionals from various fields. Light refreshments will be provided, and there’s  a chance the Shropshire Star may even make an appearance!

We look forward to seeing you there!

Tell a Fairy Tale Day! 👸🤴🏰📚

On Monday, St George’s celebrated Tell a Fairy Tale Day!  The children took part in activities that immersed them in the world of fairy tales.

To make the day extra special, our Senior Leadership Team visited each year group to share fairy tales with the children and some year groups also enjoyed buddy reading sessions where they exchanged their favourite fairy tales.

Year 2 Children’s Mental Health Week

To celebrate Mental Health Week, we went on a mindfulness scavenger hunt around the school. We used our senses to find all the things on the sheet.  Then we did some relaxation in the class. We laid on the floor, closed our eyes, and enjoyed some peaceful music together.

Year 2 Ocarina Club! 🎶

Last week in Ocarina club, the children learned how to play “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” and this week, they took on the classic masterpiece “Ode to Joy” by Beethoven. Not only did they play these melodies beautifully, but they’ve also learned how to read music.

Stay tuned for more musical adventures with our Ocarina Club! I wonder what songs they will learn to play next? 🤔

Whole School Handwriting Competition! ✏

Our very first handwriting competition was a huge success and it was wonderful to see so much enthusiasm from the children.

The children were asked to present a poem in their very best handwriting.  Prizes were awarded to the child with consistently neat handwriting and another for the most improved handwriting. Choosing these winners was extremely difficult because everyone tried hard and presented their work beautifully!

Here are some pictures of the Year 2 winners.

Keep up the excellent work, everyone!

Library Visit

Today, we were lucky to have Rachel, a special visitor from the SouthWater library in Telford, lead assemblies for both KS1 and KS2. Rachel shared valuable information about our local libraries, including how to get a library card and access books. She also explained the number of books we can borrow at once and how long we can keep them.

In the assembly, Rachel highlighted upcoming events at the library, like craft sessions, and she answered all the children’s questions. Rachel’s visit sparked lots of curiosity and enthusiasm about the wonderful world of libraries!

Author Visit in KS1

Donna David | Lindsay Literary Agency

Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting author Donna David at our school. She is the author of books such as “Trains, Trains, Trains,” “Oh no, Bobo,” and “Farmer Larmer.” Donna started the day by talking to all our KS1 children in an assembly. She shared how she fell in love with writing and books and even showed us some of her own work from when she was in Year 1.

Following the assembly, Donna led workshops for nursery, reception, and Year 1 classes. During these sessions, she talked to us about some of the books she has written and read one of her stories to us. Donna also provided a glimpse into the fascinating process she goes through to get her books published. To make it even more exciting, some children took on the roles of editors, publishers, printers, and other important people who help make books. It was an interactive and enriching experience for everyone involved!

A big thank you to Donna for inspiring us with your stories and sharing the magic of writing!

Y2 Literacy

In our recent literacy unit, we dove into poems.

The children enjoyed reading some of Michael Rosen’s poems, including “Hot Potato,” “Chocolate Cake,” and “Don’t.” To end our unit, the children wrote their own ‘Don’t’ poems. They had so much fun inventing their own real and silly rules!

See the videos below of Michael Rosen performing some of his fantastic poems!
