Dough Disco in Reception

One of the ways we get children ready for writing in Reception is by doing lot’s of fine motor activities to strengthen their hands and fingers. A particular popular fine motor activity is Dough Disco! We learn the moves that we need to do and then put them to music.

PE on Thursdays

Every Thursday the children in Reception will take part in a PE lesson. The children will need to come into school in their PE kits and they will stay in them all day. Sometimes the PE sessions will be in the school hall and sometimes they will take place outside. When PE is inside, the children will be encourage to take their shoes and socks off themselves at the start of the lesson and to put them back on by themselves at the end.

Caterpillars in Reception

Last week we had some baby caterpillars in Reception. We have been watching them over the week and can’t believe how big they are getting. We will continue to observe them and let you know what happens next with them!

Learning about fruit and vegetables in Reception

During the last couple of weeks we have been reading stories which have included different fruit and vegetables. We have learnt the names of some of these that we didn’t know before, used pastels to draw a bowl of fruit and explored some fruits and vegetables by cutting them open to see what they look like on the inside. Some children were even brave enough to taste them.

Reception are Growing Cress

This week we have been reading the story Oliver’s Vegetables by Vivian French. We have talked about growing vegetables and what all plants need to grow. We found out that cress doesn’t have to grow in soil as long as it is planted on something that can absorb water and be kept moist. We have started to grow some cress in school and are looking forward to observing the changes of the seed as it grows.

World Art Day

On Monday 15th April it was World Art Day. To celebrate this we had a special assembly for both KS1 and KS2 where we learnt that World Art Day is on Leonardo Da Vinci’s birthday. During the Assembly, every child had a piece of paper and a pencil and we drew our own Zentangles. We looked at different lines that can be used and different ways to use them. The children really enjoyed the assembly and drew some beautiful Zentangles.

Building Bridges- Reception

This week in Reception the children have been using duplo bricks to build bridges across the water. They were given the extra challenge of building a bridge that wasn’t flat on the floor. We have seen some great communication team work skills from children helping each other!

Reading Buddies!

On Thursday, the Reception children and the Year 3 children got together to do some shared reading. Mrs Weston read a story to all of us before we got into partners to share a book together. The Reception children loved the older children coming to our class to read with us and we can’t wait to do it again soon.

Welcome Kevin- Reception

This week we have introduced Kevin to the Reception children. He is going to be around to help us with social situations such as a friend not sharing with us or playing games on the playground that are a bit rough. He is also here to share happy times with us too 😊

Changes- Reception

We have been looking at changes in Science. We discussed what happens to water when we put it in a freezer and then the children had the challenge of turning the ice back into water. Most children tried to use their hands because they said their hands were warm. Some children said a towel would be warmer and melted the ice cubes by holding them in a towel.

The next task the Reception children were given was to see what would happen to  sugar cubes if they dropped water onto them. The children had lots of fun with our experiments.
