Computing Activity 💻

This coding activity is a great way of retelling The Gruffalo’ while building a simple algorithm.

An algorithm is a set of instructions to complete a task. Watch this video to learn more.

The first thing you will need to do is to print out the coding activity sheet. Your child will start the activity by finding the mouse standing by himself in the bottom left had corner of the sheet.

As you read or walk your child through the story, they will need to draw an arrow in each box connecting the events. There are several different ways to connect the events. You can encourage your child to connect the events with the fewest number of steps.

Maths Task

Starter Activity

How many different ways can you make the number 6? Use the + – and = symbols to create number sentences that total today’s magic number.

Maths Starter 2

Main Task

Read through the division PowerPoint which recaps sharing amounts before moving on to creating number sentences. Talk about how the largest number goes at the beginning because that is the amount being shared.

Repeat yesterday’s activity, only this time draw 3 circles and practise dividing by 3.

To conclude the lesson, play ‘Doggy Division Dinners’ game which requires the children to divide the bones equally between the dogs.

Literacy Task

Good morning year 1,

Let’s start our session with a game of boggle.

How many different words can you make today? Can you be your score from yesterday? 🤔

Boggle-challenge-2

Yesterday we started looking at the story ‘The Gruffalo’.

Today we will have a go at describing him using repeated language like the author. E.g. He has terrible tusks and terrible claws and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws.

Events at Dobbies - Dobbies Garden Centres

Draw and label 6 features of the Gruffalo in sentences. E.g He has purple prickles all over his back.

If you’d rather just write the sentences, here is a worksheet with the relevant pictures.

Well-being Activity ❤

Getting your children to try new things is great for them. They’ll learn more about themselves and their world, and learn to get outside their comfort zone and grow.

Think about what new things you have learned to do this year and what else you want to try. Then complete the activity below.

Say Yes to the Impossible!

STEM Challenge

Can you build a log pile house for snake just like in ‘The Gruffalo’?

Have a look in your garden for any natural materials (sticks, fallen branches and pine cones ect…) to make the house as creative as possible and use play dough to help the materials stay together.

Set up a STEAM Building Challenge inspired by The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson

This STEM building challenge does a wonderful job of combining science, engineering. You can easily add in a little technology and maths through measuring and counting the sticks.

For the science part, talk about the habitat of snakes.

  • Where do they live in the forest?
  • Why would they choose a log pile house?
  • Do they build the house or do they simply find a pile a logs and call it their house?

The engineering part of the activity is the actual building. Explore how the sticks fit together.

  • How high can you stack them before they tumble?
  • How does the play dough help stabilise the house?

There is also some design and art to the building process.

  • Is it appealing to look at?
  • Did you select a certain type of sticks?

Don’t forget to send in photo of your finished log pile house. We are excited to see what they look like! 🐍

Maths Task

Starter Activity

How many different ways can you make the number 5? Use the + – and = symbols to create number sentences that total today’s magic number.

Maths Starter 1

Main Activity

This week the activities are all based around division. Read through the division PowerPoint which shows children that division is like sharing. Talk about how the number gets smaller when we share/divide.

Practise dividing by 2 by drawing 2 circles on a plain piece of paper and asking your child to share out small amount of objects. Remind your child to count out the whole number first, then share it out. Talk about how dividing by two is the same as halving.

For today, write out the number sentence yourself so that your child can focus on sharing accurately. They can have a go at writing the number sentence this later on in the week.

Watch the video to show how the activity is done.

Literacy Task

Good morning year 1,

We will start each session this week with a game of Boggle. All you have to do is use the individual letters to create as many words as you can! The bigger the word the more points you get e.g.

  • 2 letter word – 1 pt
  • 3 letter word = 2 pts
  • 4 letter word = 3 pts
  • 5 letter word = 4 pts

This is simply a starter activity to get the children ready to learn so give them a maximum of 5 minutes to play the game and then total up the scores.

Click here to access today’s Boggle game.

This week’s literacy activities will be based on the very popular story ‘The Gruffalo’. If you don’t have a copy of the story, you can read it here.

Create a story map showing the mouse’s journey through the woods. Label the different animals that the mouse meets along the way and where they live. Here is an example to get you started.

What makes you special?

Is it your cool curly hair or the way you tell funny jokes? Can you stand on one foot or is it the song you play on the kazoo?  Remember, everyone is special and so are YOU!

Rainbow Writing

Print off this template or draw your own rainbow and write about what makes YOU special.
