Bowl of Worms!

Create tasty, edible worms. This recipe is simple and great for anytime you feel like snacking on wormy goodness! If you can make jello, then you can make these cool looking worms.

What you need:

  • 2 packs (3 oz) Raspberry jello
  • 1 pkg unflavored gelatin
  • 3/4 cup whipping cream
  • 3 cups boiling water
  • 15 drops green food coloring
  • 100 flexible straws
  • Tall container

Instructions:

  1. Combine gelatin in bowl and add boiling water.
  2. Let it cool to lukewarm and then add the whipping cream and 15 drops green food colouring.
  3. Gather your straws (don’t forget to flex them out) and put them in the container. It’s important that the straws have a tight fit so the jello stays in the straws. If you have a bigger container, a rubber band around the straws is helpful. Or you could just add more straws to fill the container.
  4. Add the gelatin mixture to the straw-filled container and let it set until firm.
  5. There are multiple ways you can remove the worms from the straws. You can roll a rolling pin over the straws and squeeze them out or you can hold the straws over warm water. The worms will slip right out.

And voila! Jello worms are served.

Maths Task

Today’s magic number is 29.

Have a go at completing the number mat for this number.

Let’s start off our final session of multiplication by watching this clip on YouTube. Can you work out how many sausages are needed for the party?

Today I would like you to make an ‘Array city’ picture with your grown up.  Cut up coloured paper (or paint/colour) to make buildings with different amounts of windows in each.

Don’t forget to write the multiplication sentences underneath each building.

Have fun! 😊

Good morning year 1,

I hope you have enjoyed our literacy activities this week.

For your final task I would like you to pretend you are one of the garden mini-beasts from the story (a bee, slug, snail or toad) and imagine how you would feel when Wizard Lizard takes Superworm away?

Write a letter to evil Wizard Lizard asking him to give your friend back. Try to include some of these points in your letter:

  • Why you want Superworm back?
  • What Superworm does to help you.
  • How you all feel without your friend?
  • How would you all feel to have him back?

I have included a template for you to write your letter on.

Have a lovely weekend.😊

Well-being activity ❤

Yesterday we looked at the importance of feeling good about yourself.

Here is a lovely picture book which explores what makes us all unique.

Now that we know Nalvana’s superpower, can you have a think about yours?

Have a go at the activity sheet below. Describe your superpower and explain how you use it each day to make a positive impact.

Remember, not all super powers are so easy to see, sometimes what makes a person special lies within.

Superworm Costume

Design a superhero costume for Superworm to wear. You could give him a mask, some cuffs, a cape or maybe even a helmet?

Draw a picture, create a collage or even make something to represent your design. How creative can you make your costume? I look forward to seeing your designs!

Today’s magic number is 36.

Have a go at completing the number mat at for today’s number.

This week we have been using arrays to solve multiplication. Watch this clip on YouTube. Meet ‘multiplication boy’ and practise counting in fives.

Write out some simple multiplication sentences on cards, and ask your child to make play dough arrays to match. If you haven’t got any any play dough you could find a recipe online and make some, or just use objects again.

Literacy Task

Good morning year 1,

Today’s session requires lots of imagination so before we begin, get out those imagination hats!

Look back at the story and make a list of all the different things Superworm is used for in the story such as being a ride, a lasso and a crane.

Think of another thing that Superworm could turn into for example, a washing line or a scarf. Remember, each adventure must include an animal that gets into difficulty, with Superworm coming to save them. Draw a picture of Superworm in action and write a few sentences.

We would love to hear what Superworm gets up to next so send in a copy of your work to year1team@stgeorgesschool.org.uk.

Well-being activity ❤

It is important to help children develop healthy levels of self-esteem so that they can cope with the pressures of life. Having healthy self-esteem means being comfortable with how you look and how you feel. It means feeling good about ourselves, our abilities and our thoughts.

Think about what makes you unique. Then have a go at the activity below.
