Yesterday we started to look at multiplication.

Read through this power point on arrays. Now look at this picture and write a multiplication sentence to match each one. How many rows are there? How many in each row?

The first one has been done for you.  3 x 3 = 9   or    3 + 3 + 3 = 9

Arrays Arrays Arrays big pack of math centers worksheets and activities

Challenge: Can you write the repeated addition number sentence too?

Here is a paper copy of the arrays in case you want to print it off.

Literacy Task

Axel Scheffler's official website | Superworm

Good morning year 1,

Today’s task is all about rhyming words! Watch this short clip on BBC Bitesize to learn about rhyme and have a go at the activities on the page.  Remember, words that rhyme have the same sound.

Rhyming Words Posters for Kindergarten & First Grade Reading ELA ...

Re-read Superworm and see if your child can find the pairs of rhyming words in the story. Then, challenge them to think of an additional word for each of the rhyming pairs. E.g. toad/road and explode.

Science Task 🔬🧪

Here is another fun science activity linked to our story ‘Superworm’.

Have a go at making your own glow worm using a glow stick and other recyclable materials you have at home! Click here to access an A4 copy of this sheet.

Use the Wildlife Trust website to find out more about glow worms and maybe create a poster about what you have learned.

Maths Task

Everyday this week l will start the session by giving the children a ‘magic number’.

Today’s number is 25.

Children will have a go at completing the magic number mat below which helps them to focus on the different elements of a number. They will…

  • Write the number in words
  • Decide whether it is odd or even
  • Choose a number that is greater than and less than
  • Split the number into tens and ones
  • Write a number sentence
  • Make the number using coins

Click here to access an A4 copy of the sheet.

The remainder of the session will focus on multiplication.

Read through the multiplication power point with your child. Try to help your child understand that multiplication is repeated addition or ‘lots of’.

2 + 2 + 2 = 6 or 3 “lots of” 2 = 6

Gather some small counting objects from around your house (stones, lego bricks, pasta, cereal, beads, toys etc) and make your own multiplication arrays as ‘lots of’ or ‘rows of’. Talk about them together and take some photographs.

E.g. There are 4 rows of 4 vehicles and that makes 16 altogether. So…  4 x 4 = 16  or 4 lots of 4 make 16.

Don’t forget to send photos of your arrays to year1team@stgeorgesschool.org.uk

Literacy Task

Axel Scheffler's official website | Superworm

Good morning year 1,

Today’s activity is all about using adjectives. Watch this video on BBC Bitesize to learn what an adjective is and have a go at the activities on the page.

What are adjectives? - BBC Bitesize

So remember, an adjective is a describing word.

Today we will be writing short descriptions of Superworm and Wizard Lizard.

Go through the story and find a picture of Superworm. Can you think of some adjectives to describe him? For example, long and bendy. Make a mind map of your ideas.Don’t forget to describe his looks and personality!

Now have a go at putting some of these words into sentences. E.g. Superworm is long and bendy. Remember to use a capital letter and full stop in every sentence!

Challenge: Can you using ‘and’ to make your sentences longer like mine?

Now do the same for Wizard Lizard.

A simplification of this task:

If your child struggles to write sentences have them generate some adjectives for both characters (Superworm and Wizard Lizard) and write them down on individual pieces of paper. Then muddle up the words and ask your child to sort them.

Today’s well-being activity focuses on FOOD! 🥗

Evidence suggests that as well as affecting our physical health, what we eat may also affect the way we feel. Improving your diet may help to:

  • improve your mood
  • give you more energy
  • help you think more clearly.

Watch this episode of ‘Get Well Soon’ to learn about the importance of eating healthily.

Have a think about which foods make you feel good and bad. Then have a go at the activity below.

Science Activity 🔬🧪

Today’s science activity is linked to our story ‘Superworm’.

Follow the instructions on the sheet below to create your very own wormery! This project will show children how worms turn plant waste into soil, introduce them to ‘recycling’ and ‘useful waste’, and encourage them to look closely at worms and other garden wildlife.

Don’t forget to release the worms back into the wild after you’ve finished your experiment.
