Children coming into school

Hi Everyone,

If your child is coming into school, please could you also ensure that your child has clothes that will keep them warm in the classrooms in all weathers. Following guidance, we have to keep the doors and windows open to ventilate rooms and it can be quite cool in some of the rooms, especially in the mornings. We need the beautiful sunshine to come back!

Thank you.

Maths Activity

Today’s activities will be focused on odd and even numbers.

Watch this video on BBC Bitesize and have a go at the activities at the bottom of the page.

Here are a few more activities for you to have a go at:

1. Try this cut and stick activity

Odd and Even Numbers - Cut and Paste Bucket Worksheet - K-3 ...

Challenge questions:

  • Can you write an even number between 5 and 10?
  • Can you write an even number between 3 and 9?
  • Can you write an odd number between 12 and 16?
  • Can you write an odd number between 9 and 15?

2. Play this interactive game on the TopMarks website.

3. Go on a walk down the street with your child and look at the house numbers. These will probably be following a pattern of either odd or even numbers. Can your child predict what number will be on the next house? Talk about the pattern.

Literacy Activity

Yesterday, you were asked to make a list of items that Pippety might have in his pocket.

Here is my finished list of ideas:

A drop of morning dew.
Three hairs from a rabbit’s tail.
A cup of sunbeams.
Two peppermint creams.
Four strawberry toffees.
A blue balloon.
An old whoopee cushion.
Six wriggling worms.
An invisible coin from the Wizard Bank.
The curly tip of a rat’s whisker.

Today I would like you to have a go at solving these riddles describing some of the items from above.

A riddle is a type of poem that works like a puzzle. It describes something using clues and hints to help the reader to figure out the answer.

If you would like to know more then watch this  video on BBC Bite size.

Now have a go at writing your own riddle based on the items you chose yesterday and send it in to year1team@stegeorgesschool.org.uk so we can have a go at solving it!

Telford and Wrekin Art Competition for World Environment Day

Hi everyone! We hope you are all safe and well. We have received this message into school today from Telford and Wrekin Council and we’d love our school to get involved!

‘We’re celebrating World Environment Day this weekend with an art competition open to anyone under 11. We thought that due to the current circumstances in schools this might be the perfect opportunity to get the kids outside and thinking about the local area?

We want to see paintings, drawings, collages and tree rubbings! Whatever it is, it just needs to celebrate the abundance of nature and wildlife we have in the borough.

We would love to share the entries on our social media accounts too – so please let us know if that’s possible?

All entries will be in with a chance of winning a post lockdown guided tour of the beautiful Lightmoor Nature Reserve with their family.

The competition is open to children aged 11 and under, living in the borough.

Please send any artwork to us at mywildtelford@telford.gov.uk by the end of Monday 8 June.’

We have emailed all St George’s families this afternoon with a printable template for the competition which you might find helpful but you can use anything you like. If you do take part, please share your pictures with us too as well as sending it to the official entry email address above. Thank you.

Well-being Activity ❤

This week we have been looking at colours associated with different emotions and this book fits perfectly with our theme!

The Color Monster is very confused and needs help in sorting his mixed-up emotions. Luckily, his friend is there to help. Watch the story and see if you can identify which feeling the last colour represents.

The answer will be revealed at the bottom of this post.

In the story, the grey monster represents fear. Everyone feels afraid or worried at time to time but it important to talk about your worries so that they don’t get out of hand.

Create your own worry monster and imagine feeding the monster all of your worries.

The pink colour monster represents the feeling of LOVE.

Maths Activities

Here are a few more maths games you can play with your child at home. Today, we are focusing on place value and times tables.

Secret numbers

Mystery Secret Code Transparent & PNG Clipart Free Download - YWD

Write the numbers 0 to 20 on a sheet of paper. Ask your child secretly to choose a number on the paper. Then ask him or her some questions to find out what the secret number is e.g.
Is it less than 10?
Is it between 10 and 20?
Does it have a 5 in it?
He or she may answer only yes or no. Once you have guessed the number, it is your turn to choose a number. Your child asks the questions.
For an easier game, use numbers up to 10. For a harder game use only 5 questions, or use bigger numbers.

Practice counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

Game 1: Scavenger hunt

Choose a times table that you would like to focus on.  Write the multiples on a piece of paper and hide them around your house or garden. Then ask you child to find all of the numbers and put them in the correct order.

To make this trickier you could hide the number sentences as well. Once everything has been found, the child has to match up the number sentences with the answers.

Game 2: Times tale hopscotch

Claire Mulhern on Twitter: "Times tables hopscotch! What a great ...

Draw out a 12 square hopscotch. Pick a times table to practise and write the multiplies on the squares. Get your child to hop to the square that they’ve thrown a stone into shouting out the multiples as they go.

Another variation of this game: Write the number sentences on the squares and children shout out the answers as they hop along.
