Big Walk and Wheel Event 2023

Register your school for Sustrans' Big Walk and Wheel today! | Raring2go!

We are taking part in Sustran’s Big Walk and Wheel, the UK’s biggest inter-school walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling to school competition. The event will run all week from 20th-24th March. It is free and we would love everyone to be involved!
On each day of the challenge schools will compete to see who can record the greatest number of pupils walking, using a wheelchair, scooting or cycling to school. The Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) at St Georges will collect this data and with the help of Miss Bibi, will add it to the Sustans website.
Schools will be entered into a daily prize draw for rewards (including equipment and accessories) if over 15% of their pupils walk, use a wheelchair, scoot or cycle on that day of the challenge.
We want all children to join in the fun and to understand the health and wellbeing benefits of active travel. Please help us to encourage your child to walk, scoot or cycle to school this week. Don’t forget to make sure they wear a helmet if they do scoot or cycle.

KS1 SATs -Parent Information

During the weeks beginning the 15th and 22nd of May 2023, your child will be sitting the KS1 ‘SATs’, (Standard Attainment Tests) in the areas of Reading and Maths. These tests are a small part of making a final teacher assessment and teachers will take into account a range of evidence from over the year to gauge your child’s overall educational attainment. These judgements will be reported to you in the final school report in July.

As a school, our approach to testing is very informal. The children will not be strictly timed and the tests will come in child-friendly booklets.

What will be in the KS1 SATs 2023 papers for Year 2?

The KS1 maths SATs is made up of two papers:

  • Paper 1 is an arithmetic test which will consist of 25 marks.
  • Paper 2 involves reasoning, problem solving and mathematical fluency. This paper has 35 marks available and contains a variety of question types.

The KS1 Reading SATs is made up of two papers:

  • Paper 1 consists of a variety of shorter texts with questions placed at intervals throughout.
  • Paper 2 consists of a longer reading booklet containing different passages with questions in a separate booklet.

You can access past papers https://www.satspapers.org.uk and clicking on the icons. You can then choose which paper you would like to view.

Please note that your child will also be assessed in writing and SPaG (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) at a later date.

How can you help your child?

Using Numbots and Times Table Rockstars helps improves children’s mental             recall of number facts such as:

  • The 2, 5 and 10 times tables and related dividing facts.
  • Mental addition and subtraction of one and two 2-digit numbers

Please continue to read regularly with your child, encouraging them to read longer texts to improve their stamina.

  • Asking questions linked to the text and discussing the vocabulary will really help to build their confidence and understanding.
  • Ask comprehension questions to build their confidence in reading texts and writing the answers.

Please make sure that during the week commencing 15th May:

  • Your child gets a good night sleep.
  • Your child eats a good breakfast.
  • They are at school on time.

If you have any questions about the SATs, please don’t hesitate to speak to the year 2 teachers.

Computing

Over the last couple of weeks, we have started a new computing unit in year 2. This unit is all about creating pictures using technology.  The children have been using PurpleMash to create pictures using the ‘2 Paint a Picture’ tool.

In the first lesson, we focussed on impressionist art (capturing a scene at the first moment) and the children produced a painting of sunset in this style. In the following lesson, they looked at pointillism. This is when paintings are created by using small dots in different colours to build up the whole picture. They created a picture of a person by manipulating an outline to change the position and filling it in with dots!

Here are some pictures of our fabulous work!

Phonics Booster! 📖📚

On Tuesday, we had our first phonics booster session after school!

The children had so much fun playing games and marching around the room to help them remember the rhyme ‘march in the dark’ for the digraph ar.

Feel free to send the children in with a snack for the next session!

World Book Day 2023

Today we celebrated World Book Day!

It was brilliant to see the children all dressed up as their favourite book characters and wearing their comfy pyjamas. The children spent the day listening to stories, reading and talking about books.

As part of the day, a member of SLT (Senior Leadership Team) visited each class to read a story and each class took part in some buddy reading with a different year group. Here are some pictures!
