Homework

Homework is optional in Year 2. It is given out every Friday and should be returned at the latest on the following Wednesday, so it can be marked ready to go out again on the Friday.

We encourage the children to practise their spellings and times tables using Spelling Shed and Times Table Rockstar. Please find the website links on classroom apps section.

KS1 SATs -Parent Information

During the weeks beginning the 15th and 22nd of May 2023, your child will be sitting the KS1 ‘SATs’, (Standard Attainment Tests) in the areas of Reading and Maths. These tests are a small part of making a final teacher assessment and teachers will take into account a range of evidence from over the year to gauge your child’s overall educational attainment. These judgements will be reported to you in the final school report in July.

As a school, our approach to testing is very informal. The children will not be strictly timed and the tests will come in child-friendly booklets.

What will be in the KS1 SATs 2023 papers for Year 2?

The KS1 maths SATs is made up of two papers:

  • Paper 1 is an arithmetic test which will consist of 25 marks.
  • Paper 2 involves reasoning, problem solving and mathematical fluency. This paper has 35 marks available and contains a variety of question types.

The KS1 Reading SATs is made up of two papers:

  • Paper 1 consists of a variety of shorter texts with questions placed at intervals throughout.
  • Paper 2 consists of a longer reading booklet containing different passages with questions in a separate booklet.

You can access past papers https://www.satspapers.org.uk and clicking on the icons. You can then choose which paper you would like to view.

Please note that your child will also be assessed in writing and SPaG (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) at a later date.

How can you help your child?

Using Numbots and Times Table Rockstars helps improves children’s mental             recall of number facts such as:

  • The 2, 5 and 10 times tables and related dividing facts.
  • Mental addition and subtraction of one and two 2-digit numbers

Please continue to read regularly with your child, encouraging them to read longer texts to improve their stamina.

  • Asking questions linked to the text and discussing the vocabulary will really help to build their confidence and understanding.
  • Ask comprehension questions to build their confidence in reading texts and writing the answers.

Please make sure that during the week commencing 15th May:

  • Your child gets a good night sleep.
  • Your child eats a good breakfast.
  • They are at school on time.

If you have any questions about the SATs, please don’t hesitate to speak to the year 2 teachers.

Reading At Home 📚 🏠

As we enter 2023 we would like to ensure that our children continue to read with an adult at home. As you can see from the table above, the longer your child reads for, the more words they will encounter to help broaden their vocabulary. Thank you so much for your support.

Homework in Year 2

Homework is vital for our children to know more and remember more. ⭐

In Year 2, homework is given to every child on a Friday and we expect it to be returned by the following Wednesday at the latest. We set a piece of mathematics and English homework each week.

As well as this, we ask that children read their phonics/Oxford Reading Tree book during the week to someone at home alongside their reading in school.

Children in Miss Bibi’s Phonics group do not bring spellings home each week to learn, only the children in Mrs Probert’s and Mrs Newbold’s spelling groups.

All children also have a username and password for TimesTable Rockstars and Spelling. This is a fantastic resource for children to use at home to support their learning.

Thank you for your continued support with this.

Times Tables Rockstars!

Every child in Year 2 should have brought home Times Tables Rockstars usernames and passwords this week. There should also have been an accompanying information sheet that explains how the game works.
