My 2020 Time Capsule

We are living through history! Children will be learning about this time in school in the future. We thought it would be a good idea to make a time capsule to remember what was going on at this time.

How to make a wonderful family time capsule {+ printable}

What are some things you could include?

All about me! How old you are, how tall you are, your favourite song ect.

How are you feeling? Record some of your feelings during this time. What are you excited to do when this is over?

Special occasions- What have you celebrated whilst in isolation?

Interview your parents! What have they enjoyed or found difficult?

Objects- Could you include a piece of your favourite game? A newspaper? A drawing of you and your family? A photograph? A toy? Some of the learning you have done?

Find a box, a bottle or any container that you like and include all of your time capsule information so that future generations can know what it was like to live through COVID-19 and how brave you all were!

Keep calm and listen to music! 🎶

Research suggests that music can stimulate the body’s natural feel good chemicals. It can help energise our mood and provide an outlet for us to take control of our feelings.

Have a think about a song that makes you feel good. Then complete the activity below.

Literacy Task- Incredible Pets

Pets are all incredible! Some are incredible for the way they look. Some are incredible for the things they can do. And some are incredible for the way they behave. Today’s writing is all about capturing the event when one of these much-loved pets carried out something truly incredible.

Begin the session by reading this example newspaper report.

Now it’s time to write your own…

Choose an animal you want to write about (there are some pictures below in case you need some inspiration) and consider the following points:

What happened?
Who needed rescuing?
Why did they need rescuing?
When did it happen?
Where did it all take place?

Kindness Project- please take part!

Hosted by the Mental Health Foundation, Mental Health Awareness Week will take place nationally from 18-24th May 2020. The theme is ‘kindness’ which fits in really well with our school values. We want to celebrate all the wonderful acts of kindness around us, that are so important to our mental health, by asking you all to email in photos of acts of kindness you have seen or are doing, create a picture, write a poem or a pretend newspaper article. Anything you like to celebrate kindness!

Kindness work to be emailed into school by Wednesday 20th May please to admin@stgeorgesschool.org.uk

Government Announcement 10.5.20

As I am sure you will have heard this evening, the Government are putting into place for Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 to return to school after half term. As a school, we do not know anymore than that at this moment in time. Please allow us time to be sent further guidance and we will communicate with you as soon as we know more.

Please note that current arrangements still stand where we are only able to have the children of existing key workers and those with a social worker in school. Again, we will let you know as soon as possible if this position changes.

Paper Planes

Make your own paper plane and have a race with someone in your family. Who’s plane will fly the furthest?

Learn and Perform a war song

As part of the VE Day celebrations, on Friday 8th May the nation is invited to sing along to a rendition of We’ll Meet Again at 9pm, just after a speech from Her Majesty the Queen.

Bouncing sums

Use a permanent marker to write random numbers all over a ball. Then when children throw the ball to each other, get them to call out the number closest to their right thumb. The next person who catches the ball does the same but also adds their number to the previous number. So the longer children spend playing the game, the higher the number they’ll finish on. The game ends when someone drops the ball.

Each time children play this game, they should record the highest number that they reach in a game. Then they can try and beat this number when they play again.

Shape Hunt

Print or draw a variety of shapes on a piece of paper and get your children to find items around the house that match these shapes. You could set a time limit for five or ten minutes, then see how many shapes they can find.

For each shape children find, you can award a single point, or award more points for irregular shapes like a hexagon.

Siblings can compete against each other to find the most shapes to score the most points.
