St George’s school buildings and grounds provide a stimulating and safe learning environment to support our pupils to flourish. All classrooms have up-to-date interactive white boards to enhance teaching and learning. The main school hall is used for lunchtimes, assemblies and collective worship, PE and a range of other activities such as Christmas performances where the staging, lighting and sound systems can be used to full effect.
We have worked very hard to improve the school environment in recent years. Improvements have included ensuring every year group have lockers for the children to use, a new staff car park, extensive painting and decorating, new carpeting in many areas of schools, new fencing and entrance gate with intercom system as well as creating eight quieter classrooms by having permanent walls built rather than curtains being used for privacy. We have also added two new canopies in our early years outdoors areas.
Our outdoors environment has a large field and two playgrounds, including two Adventure Playground areas, for the children to enjoy during lunchtime and playtimes. Our Forest School area on site is well established and allows the children to explore and develop essential skills. The school garden is well cared for by staff, pupils and volunteers where we are able to grow a range of fruit and vegetables as well as other plants, encouraging wildlife into our school grounds and learning about where food comes from.
A project funded by Telford (Centre) Rotary Club in November 2021 enabled every year group to have their own wooden planters outside of their year groups. These are used to plant a range of plants throughout the year. Thank you to the Rotary Club and DRM Aggregate Solutions Ltd for helping us to set this project up.
We also run a range of pastoral groups where the children help to take care of our garden areas in school.
We run two outdoor ‘Reading Sheds’ which can be used by children at lunchtimes. These sheds are run by pupil librarians. Thank you to Ironbridge and Severn Gorge Lions Club for their generous donation towards this project.
In 2022 we were lucky to have secured funding to be able to create our new ‘Thrive Hive’. Our ‘Thrive Hive’ means we now have a dedicated, therapeutic space for our mental health and wellbeing interventions where children feel relaxed and comfortable. The environment has been specially designed to be welcoming and safe to support our children in developing their self-esteem and a greater understanding of their emotions.
