At St George’s Primary School, we aim to engage and inspire our children to develop a love of art and design which they can take to secondary school and beyond.
We encourage our children to apply their creative skill and imagination, explore hidden talents and try new experiences. Our carefully designed curriculum provides a progressive development of knowledge and skills to ensure that children are able to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Our curriculum is fully inclusive; we provide support where needed whether this is for our SEND children or to further develop our more and most able children. We want all children to enjoy and achieve in art and design.
Teaching and Learning
Art is taught from Foundation Stage through to year six. In Foundation Stage, it is taught within the daily curriculum. From years one to six, it is taught every half term. Art is often cross curricular; it is linked to Geography, History and Science topics where appropriate, to provide meaningful contexts and links.
The children use colour, form, texture, pattern and different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think. They also explore the ideas of other artists, looking at modern, traditional and contemporary art. During their time at St George’s, they print, sculpt, draw and paint. Their work is displayed and celebrated throughout school.
Teachers use the document below to ensure that children are acquiring key skills, building on previous knowledge and developing their art vocabulary.

Other Opportunities
There is an opportunity for children to attend an after school art club. We have been part of community art projects, The Bus Stop project with a local artist was an example of this. During their time at St. George’s, children have the opportunity to work with an artist in residence to produce pieces of art from different times, places and cultures.
