Here at St George’s, we strongly believe that ALL children should be provided with opportunities to use their creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. We aim for all children to foster a love of Design and Technology within primary school and beyond and to achieve their potential in this subject.
We have designed our curriculum carefully so that our children will gain specific subject knowledge and use it alongside their knowledge from other subjects such as mathematics, science, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, thus becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of our children and allows them to discover new interests, passions and skills that may be of use in future employment. At St George’s, we strive for children to continuously ‘know more and remember more.’
Often, Design and Technology is taught in blocked lessons to allow the children to fully engross themselves and engage in the topic and build on each day’s work. This allows the children to self-assess each day and reflect on what they have achieved and make necessary adjustments/improvements to their projects. Each project has been carefully chosen to ensure that life skills and employability skills are incorporated and that children can see how they fit into real-life contexts.
The curriculum is designed carefully to support children who may require additional help and support. This may be in the form of peer or adult support or differentiated activities.
At St George’s School, we provide children with exciting learning experiences. An example of this is visiting Pizza Express, where the children can create a pizza in a working kitchen environment alongside professional chefs. During the summer term, the children will participate in a whole school ‘Come Dine With Me’ experience where they design, prepare and create a tasty meal for another year group as well as develop their hosting skills.
After-school clubs are on offer for children to participate in more Design and Technology within school.
Teachers use the document below to ensure that children are acquiring key skills, building on previous knowledge and developing their design and technology vocabulary.
